New 'Welcome to the Cub,' 'BSA Today' Videos and Resources Help Spread Family Scouting Message

A pair of new videos are being widely released to Scouting families this week that help tell the story of how families can get involved in our life-changing programs:

This year, we’re excited to officially welcome girls and boys into the Cub Scouts and invite even more families to take advantage of the life-changing experiences provided through Scouting. After all, the values that Scouts are known for – including being trustworthy, loyal, helpful, and brave among others – are as relevant for girls as they are for boys.

To celebrate this, we are introducing two new videos. One that we affectionately call “Welcome to the Cub,” which we hope you’ll join us in sharing. It offers a chance to hear from Cub Scouts themselves, boys and girls, about why all kids will love Cub Scouts.  Their perspective is refreshing, thoughtful and priceless! We loved hearing from them, and we know that the Scouting community will celebrate them, too.

"Welcome to the Cub"

The video can be viewed on our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/ONSCBSA/) and the Cub Scout Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/officialcubscouts/ ).

The second video gives an overview of changes to the program. It tells how having girls in Cub Scouts and Scouts BSA change the Scouting experience.

"Changes in Scouting"

Once the videos debuts, we encourage you to share it on your District and Unit social channels (ideally from the Cub Scout Facebook page), with your local packs/dens, with local media, and even your personal social channels.

Scouts BSA Timeline Added to Family Scouting Page

With fall Cub Scout recruiting in full swing, the February 2019 launch for girls joining Scouts BSA is still several months away. To keep abreast of the launch plans and marketing materials that are being developed, however, check out the Scouts BSA Pre-Launch Timeline that has been added to the "Scouts BSA Program Resources" box on the Family Scouting page. More information and resources will be shared — and added to that page — in the coming weeks

'Se Un Scout' — Spanish Version of BeAScout — Released

Just in time for fall recruiting, we're pleased to introduce SeUnScout.org — the Spanish-language version of BeAScout! Two screen captures of the new site are attached for your use in promoting this tool to your Spanish-speaking audience.

September is Boy Scouts Month at Bass Pro Shops and Cabelas

Join us in celebrating more than a century of Scouting. Together, let's continue the tradition.

Bass Pro Shops and Cabela's are offering three merit badge classes for Scouts: Fishing, Fish and Wildlife Management, and Rifle Shooting. Classes are available at the store to help Scouts work toward earning their badges on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays beginning at 6 p.m. For scheduling, please see the attached flier (Bass Pro Cabelas Boy Scout Month.pdf).

The Path Forward: The BSA and the Church of Jesus Christ

For more than a century, the Boy Scouts of America and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have worked together to instill character, citizenship, and fitness in millions of young people. For those families, Scouting is more than an activity – it’s a legacy.

Although the formal partnership with the Church will come to an end as of December 31, 2019, the Scouting journey for families can continue! Later this week, a letter (see attached) will be mailed to members of the Church outlining their path forward.

In addition, a new page on scouting.org has been created to provide the latest news and updates as families transition to other Scouting units. The page features a video from former National Commissioner Charles Dahlquist, who discusses changes to the relationship between the BSA and the Church and how Scouting families can with Scouting.

Woodfield Range Officer Training-Saturday, September 8

What is Range Officer Training?     Old North State Council guidelines require specific procedures and advanced qualification for Range Officers to conduct shooting sports at the Woodfield Ranges during District Family Encampments and Shooting Sports Weekend events.  Individuals completing this course will receive BB/Archery/WRO certification (valid for 2 years) and be expected to act as Range Safety Officer for at least two Woodfield events in the next 12 months.

The emphasis for this program will be training in specific Woodfield procedures (safety, opening/closing ranges, equipment), training in how to run Woodfield ranges safely and efficiently for various size groups, training in how to teach basic BB Gun and Archery skills to Cub Scouts, and training in various shooting and scoring procedures related to cub scout shooting awards.    (Note: The BB/Archery certification is valid for all BSA cub scout shooting sports activities including Day Camps for any BSA councils – the WRO certification portion is specific to our council and is valid only within ONSC).

All district Family Camping events and every Shooting Sports Weekend event requires a certified Woodfield Range Officer for each range used. The Woodfield Range Officer Committee is responsible for providing certified WRO’s for each event (WRO’s are BSA registered adults who have completed this course and are willing to volunteer to serve as Range Officers and Instructors for scheduled events).   Click here to register
