Financial Assistance Expanded for BSA Youth Members in 2020!

Old North State Council is excited to announce the expansion of local funding to support an even greater number of youth in need beginning with the Jan. 1, 2020 BSA national membership renewal/recharter cycle. We understand the youth membership fee increase from $33 to $60 per Cub Scout, Scouts BSA, and Venturing member is significant and provides a financial challenge to many families.

We wanted to share this news as soon as possible so units can plan accordingly in completing their 2020 annual membership renewal/recharter process. With that written, we are still determining the complete financial assistance submission process. However, I can share at this time that to be eligible to submit a financial assistance form for youth in need:

  1. A unit must commit to participate in the Council Popcorn Sale in 2020 and sell at least $1,000 in product
  2. A unit must commit to participate in the Council Camp Card/Vendor Discount Card Sale and sell at least $750 in product
  3. A unit must commit to cover at least 50% of the $60 BSA membership fee per youth in 2020 for each instance when requesting financial assistance

The finalized financial assistance plan (including submission form) will be distributed no later than Thursday, November 7, 2019. Funds will be available to units first during the 2020 recharter process and then (funding dependent) throughout the remainder of the year as new Scouts join units. We will distribute the financial assistance form in future editions of the Council e-newsletter; at Scouting Roundtable meetings; at the Council Service Center in Greensboro; and it will be posted at www.bsaonsc.org

We are excited to make funding available to youth in need. Thank you in advance for your help communicating this program and encouraging families to join (and remain in) the Scouting program!

Yours in Scouting,

Ed Martin, Scout Executive/CEO

New Youth Safety Webpage

This new Youth Safety webpage offers an easy-to-navigate overview of our youth protection program using language and visuals that help the general public or those who are new to Scouting understand what the Boy Scouts of America does to help keep kids safe. This webpage does not replace the pre-existing Youth Protection webpage; instead, it offers an overview of our policies in a simplified version for those who may not be familiar with our terminology our program details. It also features expert testimonials, access to our Youth Protection Training, clarification of top misconceptions and a summary of BSA’s commitment to being part of a broader solution to address child abuse. We will continue to update the page as opportunities arise, but we encourage you to visit and share this as a resource when asked about BSA’s youth protection efforts.
