Scouting programs going strong in our local Old North State Council

The new year has begun and Scouting is off to great start for Cub Scout Packs, Scouts BSA Troops, Venturing Crews, Sea Scout Ships, and Exploring Posts in the Old North State Council.
Check out the calendar of all the upcoming Scouting events throughout our eight-county service area.

Thank you for your commitment to the positive development of our young people. Dedicated volunteers like you are the reason Scouting is one of the more impactful youth and family programs in America today!

Please take a moment to review the documents in the three links below for further information on local Scouting and an update from our BSA National Organization.

FAQ regarding BSA legal status                             ONSC 2017-2021 Strategic Map

In the days ahead, this same information will be mailed to all registered Scouting families (6,000+) in Old North State Council. As you can imagine, it is quite a process to assemble and distribute a three-piece mailing to thousands of addresses across the Triad. For the sake of timeliness, we are sharing this information first through our weekly e-newsletter- the most widely referenced news source for local Scouting.

Again, thank you for your commitment to local Scouting and all you are doing to deliver great program experiences to our youth!

2020 Scouting for Food

Each year, the Boy Scouts of America celebrates its anniversary in February by giving back to the community through the Scouting for Food campaign. The Scout Oath states “To help other people at all times” and four of the 12 points of the Scout Law are “helpful, friendly, courteous, kind” so service to our communities is of paramount importance to who we are as Scouts and Scouters.

Door hangers were distributed last Saturday. Scouts will be collecting the food items this Saturday, Feb 8. If your unit is participating, thank you very much for this extremely valuable and much appreciated community service. Please ensure all neighborhoods where hangers were place are re-visited. Contact your district Scouting for Food Coordinator for assistance if needed. We’ll see YOU at the drop off location this Saturday!

More Flush Toilets at Cherokee Scout Reservation

New Construction Requires Temporary Closure of Some Campsites for Weekend Camping

Excited to announce the addition of 16 more flush toilets to Cherokee Scout Reservation. At the end of the project, each existing shower facility will house four additional flush toilets. This addition will meet your unit’s needs and improve our Scouts’ and families’ camping experience at CSR. However, these improvements will cause a little discomfort and inconvenience at first.

Starting in early February, we will begin the remodel of all four of our shower houses. The shower facility remodel construction sites will result in unsafe areas for our Scouts, families, and units.

To ensure the safety of those using Cherokee during weekend unit camping, we will close all campsites near the shower facilities. Units will be able to use Delaware, Pawnee, and Sioux for weekend camping. Units will still be able to use the rifle and archery ranges for program during this period, but we will request an increase in adult supervision as campers walk past the Chippewa shower facility.

The closure of campsites excluding Delaware, Pawnee, and Sioux will begin on Monday, February 10 and go through completion of construction. We anticipate construction will end in mid-May.

We will make contact with units who currently have a campsite reservation for another campsite to move to Delaware, Pawnee, or Sioux

We also encourage units to consider camping at our other properties – Woodfield, Hemric, and Hagan.

Direct questions regarding campsite reservations for unit camping to Kristina Edmondson at kristina.edmondson@scouting.org.

Unauthorized Activities: Keeping our Scouts Safe is our Top Priority!

It is critical that you ensure your Scouting activities and events are BSA-approved and do not put Scouting youth and families at risk. As a reminder, pumpkin chunking and snowmobiling are two examples of unauthorized activities that pose a significant danger to participants. For more information, review this Safety Moment or visit the Guide to Safe Scouting.

Boy Scouts of America Safety Moment: First Aid Kits

All Scouts and Scout leaders—as representatives of an organization whose motto is “Be Prepared”—should be sure they are always ready with an appropriate first-aid kit when it’s needed. Your kit may be simple, or more complex if you are trained to use it properly. But the kit must always be on hand and stocked with every essential item.
