ONSC Office will open for business at 9:00 am Monday, May 11.

No overnight camping still in effect per NC Executive Order.

Scouting activities of 10 people or less are now permitted!
We strongly encourage social distancing and use of face shields.

The safety of all Scouting families and our staff continues to be our top priority.
We are excited to open the Council Service Center and have implemented the following policies and best practices for the safety of all.

  • Council Service Center hours will be 9:00am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday. We will use 30-minutes prior to 9:00am and after 4:30pm to sanitize the facility.
  • A professional cleaning crew following strict standards will continue to clean and sanitize staff common areas and public usage areas on weekends.
  • A clear protection shield will be in place at the customer service counter for the safety of our Scouting families and staff.
  • Social distancing will be observed in the lobby with stand-up signs and tape on the floor every six feet.
  • There will be no hand-to-hand transactions with money, credit cards, BSA registrations, Eagle Scout project books, or any other documents.
  • All documents will be deposited in a clearly marked “Drop Box” positioned in the center of the customer service lobby. Items will sit for period of time for safety precautions and then be retrieved by staff.
  • The staff work area will be a closed area for the safety of all Scouting volunteers/families and staff.
  • Scouting volunteers arriving at the customer service counter to meet with staff will be asked to wait in the lobby and then meet with staff using social distancing in one of the front conference rooms. Staff members will then be called at their office extensions or cell phones to meet the volunteer(s).
  • The kitchen/break room will be closed for eating or congregating by staff and Scouting volunteers/families.
  • The two small conference rooms in the front of the building will be designated for usage by 3 or less people at one time. Chairs and tables must be arranged by the assigned staff person in advance to meet social distancing requirements before meeting with Scouting volunteers. Face shields must be worn by staff when meeting in any conference room.
  • The large conference room in the front of the building will be designated for usage by 10 or less people at one time. Chairs and tables must be arranged by the assigned staff person in advance to meet social distancing requirements before meeting with Scouting volunteers. Face shields must be worn by staff when meeting in any conference room.
  • All Scouting district and Council-level meetings will continue virtually. District and Council-level functions with 10 people or less may be conducted in the large conference room in the front of the building, following social distancing requirements. However, it is strongly recommended that all meetings continue virtually.

The Passing of Royce Reynolds: A Great Man and Great Friend to Local Scouting and Our Community

Dear Scouting Family:

It is with a heavy heart I share the news of the passing of Royce Reynolds on May 6. I learned of his passing just moments ago. Here’s all the information I can share at this time.

Many in local Scouting know the special relationship Old North State Council has enjoyed with Royce and his family for many years. The current Old North State Council Volunteer and Family Service Centers bears Royce’s name thanks to his tremendous generosity and support for local Scouting. I have been blessed to know Royce and his wonderful wife Jane in the four-plus years I’ve served as Scout Executive. I spoke with Jane just a few weeks ago while she and Royce were at their home in Florida. We were looking forward to visiting in-person here in Greensboro following the COVID-19 pandemic. I have grown to deeply admire Royce and Jane, and all they have done to improve the quality of life for families in Greater Greensboro. They have been an amazing blessing to local Scouting and so many other community-serving organizations. Their philanthropy and can-do spirit has been unmatched in so many ways.
Please keep Jane and her family in your thoughts and prayers. Local Scouting will pay tribute to Royce in the near future.
YIS, Ed Martin

Council Camps (with the exception of Cherokee - Under Construction) will be open for "Day Visits" by Scouting groups of 10 people or less beginning Friday May 15

  • After some facility cleaning, Woodfield, Hagan, and Hemric (Scouts BSA troop members and Venturers only at Hemric due to BSA safety regulations) will reopen for Scouting members of 10 people or less to “day visit” on Fridays, Saturdays, or Sundays beginning on Friday, May 15.

  • Standard Council practices of online reservations to use Council properties will be followed. More than one 10-person group can be present at the same time at Woodfield if reserving separate activity areas. However, only one 10-person group will reserve at one time at both Hagan and Hemric.

  • Cherokee will remain closed due to ongoing construction projects that make that property unsafe for visitors.

Camp Card Update!

Camp Card sales should be able to resume with the opening of many businesses.

The sale deadline is extended until Friday, June 29 at 5:00 pm.

While the goal should be to sell as many cards as your Scouts need to attend summer camp and activities in the fall,
we realize that the closure will affect some people's ability to buy cards.
To offer relief for those units that may face challenges in their communities,
the return rate is adjusted up from 25% to 40%.

Please contact matthew.lanouette@scouting.org for further information.

Eagle Scout Rank Achievement During COVID-19

Update as of May 7 12:00 pm

The Old North State Council's Advancement Committee recognizes the need and urgency for scouts to remain on track with their Eagle project proposals, particularly as summer is approaching.  Therefore, the following guidelines are issued that will maintain compliance with Governor Cooper's latest Phase 1 COVID-19 rollout plan:

Project proposals are submitted to the council office via normal district channels.

  •  Council office then emails proposals to Eagle Board Chairs (or their designee) for circulation to project board members.
  •  District Eagle Project Boards then meet either remotely via audio/video chat or conference call to review proposals.
Another option would be to meet in a small group of adult board members (less than 10 while practicing safe distancing) to review proposals.

Please remember that all in-person gatherings of more than 10 people are not permitted by NC executive order.
  • Approved proposals signed by the designated district board member will be emailed back to the candidate with a copy to the Eagle Coach and Unit Leader.
  • Proposals that are not approved will also be forwarded back to the Scout with a copy to the Eagle Coach and Unit Leader along with recommendations that will bring the project to an approved status.  Included with this commentary will be instructions on how the candidate should proceed to resubmit the proposal.

IMPORTANT:  When it comes to forwarding documents, email is the preferred method, simply because it offers a better tracking mechanism along with providing a copy, should one get misplaced.  Therefore, it is critical that Proposal Page B (Contact Information) of the Eagle Scout Project Workbook be completed in its entirety with accurate email addresses in order for this process to be successful.  Also, once fieldwork begins for Eagle projects, safe distancing, and in-person gatherings less than ten are still in force.  This practice would apply to all Scouts, friends, and family members working on the project. Please email jonathan.clapp@scouting.org for further information.

The Old North State Council has been given authority to grant extensions until September 30, 2020
