Cherokee Scout Reservation Ranger Marvin Preslar to Retire on January 31, 2021

We are at once delighted and disheartened to announce that Camp Ranger Marvin Preslar is retiring, effective January 31, 2021. Marvin’s departure marks the end of an era for the Old North State Council and Cherokee Scout Reservation (CSR).

When Marvin joined the Cherokee Council as the camp ranger in April 1988, he became the second person to serve as camp ranger. Much has changed during Marvin’s 33-year tenure. We grew the number of Scouts attending CSR from 500 Scouts to 2000 due to the merger of Cherokee Council with the Old North State Council. The increase in campers called for increases of infrastructure that Marvin oversaw – expansion of dining hall, construction of shower houses, and addition of climbing tower. Marvin was intimately involved in recent improvements and additions to Cherokee – construction of the Trade Skills & STEM Lab, ATV field and riding trail, transition from canvas tents to adirondacks, remodel of shower houses, and addition of electricity to all campsites.

Campers and visitors will remember Marvin’s friendly nature, welcoming smile, and quality customer service. We are all indebted to Marvin for his commitment to CSR ensuring that camp is always in good repair and ready to host Scouts. His lifetime of work has assured that camp is prepared for all future campers, visitors, and families.

Marvin’s retirement is our loss, but a well-deserved respite for him. He’s looking forward to fishing, growing a garden, and spending time with family.

Once COVID-19 mitigation protocols allow, we will honor Marvin in a manner that is fitting for his contributions to CSR and local Scouting.
